THE LIGHTSHIP
Part 11
Annie waited, then yelled Bass’ name again. There was still no answer, so she gingerly pulled open the door of the dock house and stuck her head inside. After what Dorcas had told her she’d braced herself, but it made no difference when the flashlight beam revealed an empty room. There was no desk, no chair, no hooks on the wall, no clothes, no coffee cup, no sandwich, no nothing. Her shaking hand could barely control the light as it aimlessly bounced off the bare walls and uneven floorboards.
Annie desperately wanted to get away from the shack, but just as she was backing out, something ran out the door grazing her leg. She screamed and turned to see a large rat staring at her from just a couple feet away. It raised up on its hind legs and sniffed the air, then scurried away and disappeared off the side of the dock. Annie threw up in her mouth and wondered how many Zolofts she’d taken.
