In the fall of 1974, having successfully completed my secondary studies at Lincoln High School in Portland the previous spring, I packed all of my worldly belongings in the back seat of a 1961 Ford Fairlaine – my grandfather had no further use of that pristine beauty because he conveniently died a month earlier – and pointed her south on Interstate 5 bound for Eugene and the University of Oregon.
